Here's the stuff that all of you
have been waiting for, I'm sure. It's the rules. *sound of thunder* The
what-not-to-do-without-asking-permission set of instructions. Some of
these pertain to IC, some to OOC, and some to both.
The punishments for breaking any of the IC rules (which are coming don't
worry) vary from extra mucking duty or chores, to being grounded if you're
flying, to having your graduation delayed. (Which I DON'T want to do.)
Please, if you're not sure about something, ask one of the WLMs before you
do it. We don't mind IC bad behaviour. We'd just like to know what's
coming so that we can be sure that it won't affect your progress.
Limits - you are not allowed to @tel out of the weyr for any IC
reason. Like a fl hatching. You can not take the dragonets from the weyr,
and you will not leave the weyr without permission from me or a AWLM until
you come to the stage where you're able to fly to the holds or to where
your lifemate doesn't mind being separated from you for the time it takes
for a rider to give you a ride someplace and back. Also if I say no, don't
bother asking one of the AWLM, chances are I have +mailed them that I
already said no.
A Weyr is not a military, but it's about as close as you're going to get
on Pern. A rider's life may depend upon the discipline they learn as a
Weyrling. Saluting all full riders is part of that. Residents, Crafters
and Holders do not need salutes, but politeness is expected. For the last
few classes, the barracks has been a 'safe ground'. That is the Weyrling's
refuge, so when in there, you do not have to salute. Another thing... if
someone disconnects, then reconnects, or leaves a room and comes back
after you've already saluted them, you do not have to re-salute.
No AUTOMATIC salutes (i.e. salute code). Enough said.
You are responsible for attending at least one of the scheduled training
sessions. If you miss too many with no reasons given then your graduation
will be delayed. You are a huge representive of Western Weyr. It is my
responsibility to be sure that you are ready to just be let loose on Pern
;)
You will not make any major training decisions on your own. Among other
things, that means you will not have your dragon fly, you will not fly on
your dragon and you will not go *between* until instructed to by me or a
AWLM, your dragon will not get sick or otherwise delay his/her training.
If you miss traning sessions do not come up with IC reasons why you are
behind without clearing it with me first. That just prevents me from
getting you caught up. I am going to do my best at all times to tell you
what you are allowed and what you should be RPing, if you have a question,
don't hesitate to ask.
Even if you have had Healer or Dragonhealer training you will not diagnose
any illnesses you suspect in your dragons. If you think anything is wrong
with your dragon, come to one of us, or to the Weyrleaders, and we'll make
sure a dragonhealer takes a look. But again, I ask this be approved by me
first. Especially if it will delay training.
Fights - don't do them. Young dragons are very sensitive to
emotional and physical disturbances. Any stress or disagreement is hard on
our dragon at this very young age. They get confused easily and will
assume any injury to their riders is more serious than it really is. There
have been episodes of young dragons betweening because they thing their
rider has died when in actuality they have only passed out. I am sure you
don't want that anymore than I do. If you do have IC differences with
someone, walk away and come talk to one of us. Even a full rider would
avoid violence just because of the reaction and stress it would cause his
dragon.
Another strong emotion centers around sex. As hard as it might be don't do
it til the dragons are an IC turn. This is a good area to get punished for
if I catch anyone in compromising positions. Although this theory isn't
held by everyone, I tend to believe the same thing the previous WLM does;
that sex is actually something you'd probably not be interested in for
most of the next IC turn anyway. Your psyche has been suddenly entwined
with that of an immature creature who won't even be close to feeling those
emotions and desires themselves for quite awhile. What you will be dealing
with for the next few IC months is the intense hunger, curiosity, love,
and I-ITCH! emotions from your lifemate. Anyway, that's just my thoughts.
Sex is a no-no until your lifemate is ready to rise or chase pretty much.
Alcohol - Not a no-no if done in moderation but a drunk weyrling or
a weyrling with a buzz can frighten her lifemate who won't know what his
rider's jumbled thoughts and emotions mean. They can be frightened enough
to go *between* before they are ready and arelost forever. So it's better
to abstain.
This lecture is almost entirely word-for-word from Ceres' and Karitha's
old HRW Weyrling lectures on PernMUSH. I'd like to thank them for giving
WEW a legacy that can be passed down to future generations.
